In Queensland our vision is that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies are born healthy into strong resilient families.
Care during your pregnancy is called maternity care.
Regular visits with your midwife, health worker, or doctor help to make sure that you are well, and baby is growing well.
If you identify as First Nations or you’re carrying a baby who will identify, you may be able to use First Nations maternity care. Talk to your local:
They can give you more information and help you with the next steps. Some hospitals also have maternity care programs specifically for First Nations women.
Cultural traditions
During your pregnancy, you might like to think about cultural traditions or practices that are important to you. For some women it’s a time to consider how they’ll pass their cultural values on to baby. There may also be a ‘Welcome baby to community’ event that you can join in after baby arrives. You can reach out to your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker for help to navigate this.
